NSW police have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Police said they did not immediately pursue the riders due to safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

Later in the week, authorities announced they had served the US social media influencer who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), with a fine of over five hundred dollars and penalty points per notice, in relation to the bridge incident. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4m subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2m on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The content creator gave comments to a local publication recently following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, stating he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we reverse, basically, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," he stated. "We must make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are given the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of the following year, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
