Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
