The Heartbreaking Transformation Just One Year Has Caused in America
In late October 2024, the environment was utterly different. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful citizens could acknowledge the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – however they continued to see it as America. A democracy. A land where legal governance held significance. A state guided by a dignified and upright leader, even with his older age and growing weakness.
Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us barely recognize the land we reside in. Persons believed to be unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and forced into transport, at times denied due process. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is being torn down for an obscene ballroom. The leader is targeting his political rivals or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are deployed across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the War Department, has effectively liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Institutions, legal practices, journalism organizations are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are treated like members of the royal family.
“The US, just months before its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the limit toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented in August. “In the end, swifter than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.
However, we know that the president was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling first term and despite the alerts that came with the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after Trump himself declared plainly he would be a dictator solely at the start – a majority of citizens chose him over Kamala Harris.
While alarming as the current reality are, it's more frightening to realize that we have only been several months under this leadership. How will three more years of this downfall find us? And if that timeframe transforms into an prolonged era, because there is not anyone to restrain this president from determining that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?
Certainly, all is not lost. There are midterm elections the coming year which might create a new governmental control, in case Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. There are elected officials who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation into the attempted fund seizure by federal prosecutors.
And a national vote in 2028 could initiate us down the road to healing precisely as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.
There exist numerous residents demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.
Robert Reich, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare in that decade or during the sixties activism or throughout the Watergate scandal.
During those times, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.
The author states he recognizes the signs of that revival and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept military mandates they solely cover approved content.
“The sleeping giant consistently stays inactive till certain corruption becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive of societal benefit, some brutality so loud, that he has no choice except to rise.”
It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the major inquiries persist: can America regain its footing? Can it retrieve its position globally and its adherence to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is correct; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we must try, in whatever ways possible.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that’s about pushing media professionals to live up, more completely, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to defend voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to continue fighting.
