A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was found soon after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene displayed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
