Alarming Number of People Now Engage in Vaping, Reports Global Health Body
More than 100 million users, featuring at least 15 million children, currently employ e-cigarettes, fueling a new trend of nicotine dependency, as stated by current worldwide medical findings.
Children are, on average, nine times more likely than grown-ups to vape, per available international data.
Electronic cigarettes are fueling a "new wave" of nicotine dependency, commented a prominent health expert. "These devices are advertised as risk reduction but, in reality, are addicting youth on nicotine at younger ages and endanger undermining years of improvement."
Teens Being 'Targeted'
"Countless of people are stopping, or refraining from tobacco consumption thanks to tobacco control measures by states around the planet," the representative stated.
"In response to this strong progress, the tobacco industry is pushing back with new nicotine products, aggressively targeting youth. Governments must act quicker and more forcefully in applying tested tobacco-control regulations," the representative continued.
The vaping figures are a projection since several countries - 109 in sum, and several in African and Southeast Asia - lack data.
Per the report, as of this past February this period, at least 86 million e-cigarette consumers were mature individuals, mainly in wealthy countries.
And at bare minimum 15 million teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15 presently engage in vaping, per research from 123 countries.
Even though several states have tried to establish e-cigarette rules to combat child vaping in recent years, by the end of 2024, 62 countries still had no measure in operation, and 74 nations had no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be bought, reports the medical authority.
Meanwhile, tobacco consumption has been declining - from an estimated 1.38 billion users in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024.
Occurrence of tobacco use among women decreased the greatest - from 11% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2024.
Among males, the reduction was from 41.4% in 2010 to 32.5% in 2024.
But one in five of adults worldwide still employs tobacco.
